When a personal injury case is complex and emotional, Meghan Hull Jacquin is in her element
Taking on challenging cases while supporting her clients through their journey from trauma to recovery is Hull Jacquin’s main motivation
For the past 20 years, Meghan Hull Jacquin, a partner at Howie, Sacks & Henry LLP, has built her career taking on challenging cases that require extensive investigation and litigating matters involving complex medical and legal issues. After representing insurance companies for less than a year, she realized that advocating for injured people was her calling. In a career that requires empowering clients while navigating both the uniqueness of their conditions and the complexities of the legal system, Hull Jacquin brings extensive experience in building strong cases, negotiating fair resolutions and representing clients at trials and tribunal hearings.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
My clients are journeying through recovery following a devastating injury, coping with a change in their independence, feeling the financial pressure and working to build a “new normal” after what is often a significant change in their life plans. I use my unique skills to empower clients, become their voice, ease their burden and support their journey toward rebuilding—offering them a renewed sense of hope.
You’ve taken on some pretty high-profile cases. Is it difficult to practise law in the media spotlight?
Sometimes media attention is important. For my clients, sharing their stories and impacting the lives of others can make them feel that their tragedy was not in vain. While some cases may attract regional, national or even international attention, I never lose sight of what matters most—my clients, their lives and my responsibility to support and represent them to the best of my ability.
How has your practice changed in the past 10 years?
The tremendous amount of experience I have gained over the past decade has allowed me to refine my skills. I am fortunate to have been mentored and taught by some of Canada’s very best litigators—who also happen to be at Howie, Sacks & Henry! I am confident taking on complex cases and seeing them through to verdict, if necessary. I have built a reputation as a leader in the field of personal injury—known as a fearless advocate, a strategic yet practical thinker and someone deeply committed to the well-being of my clients.
What advice would you give to a new lawyer at the start of a legal career?
Be respectful but firm. Be kind yet not a pushover. Be thoughtful yet stand your ground. Take reasonable positions and be practical. Compromise on things that make sense and don’t give in if they don’t. Be intentional about the reputation you build; it can take a long time to build and a moment to destroy. I have extensively mentored young women who are beginning careers in law. In a field that continues to be male dominated, be yourself. Play to your strengths and work hard. Be the expert in the room and command the respect that you deserve.
What is your favourite article of clothing?
I love my courtroom robes. Wearing them is a privilege that I do not take for granted. They are a symbol of the pride that I take in my work. It is an honour to wear them when I am giving a voice to my clients that they otherwise would not have.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my husband and three children, travelling and cheering them on in their sports and charitable pursuits. I love outdoor adventures, including fly fishing, swimming and hiking, as well as spending time with my large extended family, my dog, cat and backyard chickens.
Meghan Hull Jacquin is always happy to meet with potential new clients and is grateful to accept referrals of cases, complex or otherwise, from her colleagues.
