Reporting to the VP, General Counsel and Secretary, the Bilingual Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and strategic support in both official languages. The Bilingual Counsel will act as a primary liaison for customers, regulators and co-workers who are spread across the country. The Bilingual Counsel will work closely with the Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary and other members of the CCCBL legal team to address any matters relating to protecting and defending the organization from legal actions and improving the efficiency of commercial operations, including real estate, employment, procurement, customer contracts and other agreements. This is the second highest legal position in the organization. In addition, the Bilingual Counsel will be responsible for:

  • Drafting and negotiating customer agreements, procurement and technology agreements, real estate and other varied transactions
  • Review of varied corporate materials and business documents, including marketing and promotional materials, press releases, presentations and policies
  • Providing creative and strategic legal advice and support for varied areas of law – Corporate/Commercial, Licensing, Marketing, Competition, Real Estate, Litigation assessment and support, Risk Management
  • Assisting finance and internal controls staff to ensure compliant financial reporting, audit and governance
  • Indirect management and review of the work of other members of the CCCBL legal team
  • Cross-functional projects team work of various kinds
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations and agreements
  • Training and education of business associates, both remotely and in live presentations
  • Employment law and Privacy law advice
  • Management of outside counsel

EDUCATION PREFERRED:

Canadian Law degree or equivalent; strong academic results

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum three years’ experience in private practice and two years’ in-house experience; qualified to practice in Canada
  • Must be fluently bilingual in written and spoken English and French
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects and carefully prioritize work
  • Must be proactive and self-starter
  • Embraces and drives change; constantly seeks to learn and develop
  • Strong communications skills, including written and presentation; ability to influence varied clients, up to and including senior executives; ability to communicate complex legal topics to all business clients
  • Drives performance, efficiency and effectiveness
  • Business-minded; understands that the best in-house counsel are business people with law degrees
  • Flexibility and approachability
  • Solution-oriented, thinks pragmatically and strategically
  • Capability with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Powerpoint and Excel
