Maya Borooah’s practice focuses on criminal defence, regulatory litigation, internal investigations and corporate compliance. She has extensive trial experience defending clients accused of serious criminal offences, and has appeared before all levels of court, as well as before the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights.
Maya’s recent work focuses on complex internal investigations, corporate compliance monitorships, and cases with a nexus between criminal and professional discipline proceedings. She has experience conducting corporate compliance and workplace investigations, and in representing respondents subject to investigations. In addition to her experience with investigations, Maya holds an Osgoode Advance Certificate in Workplace Investigations.
Maya has a particular interest in sentencing law, and is the co-author of Sentencing Principles and Practice, 2nd edition, as part of Emond’s Criminal Law Series. She has also published on the role of experts in the litigation process in a peer-reviewed publication.
Prior to joining Henein Hutchison Robitaille LLP, Maya clerked for the Alberta Court of Appeal and articled at a leading labour and civil litigation firm in Toronto. Maya received her JD from the University of Ottawa, where she graduated second in the English Common Law class and received a number of distinctions, including the Osgoode Society Prize for Canadian Legal History, and the BLG Professional Excellence Award. While at law school, Maya was a division leader in the Criminal Division of the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic, where she represented low-income clients in a variety of criminal matters.
