DBRS Limited seeks a highly motivated, team-oriented lawyer with at least three years of experience to join its Global Corporate Finance team in Toronto. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Legal Counsel, Global Corporates, the selected candidate will work closely with the corporate analysts in reviewing a wide variety of debt financing transactions. In this role, s/he will also provide support on the review of applicable policies, procedures and methodologies as well as the development and implementation of formal legal training for the analytical teams.

The ideal candidate will possess experience with secured lending, combined with sound knowledge of general corporate law, bankruptcy and insolvency and some experience in public and/or privately placed debt financing transactions. Experience in project finance and/or public-private partnership transactions, while not required, would be beneficial. The ideal candidate combines financial literacy with an ability to  identify legal and reputational risk and will possess business acumen to communicate legal and criteria issues clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Review of financing documentation for various types of debt issuances within different corporate sectors to assist with evaluating appropriate corporate finance credit ratings.
  • Advise of any potential legal issues or exceptions to the methodologies that may have an impact on credit ratings.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal issues within the relevant industry.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of training to corporate analysts on the legal aspects of corporate finance ratings work.

Requirements

  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience at a recognized law firm, government entity or as in-house counsel.
  • LLB degree, called to the Bar in Ontario, and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada.
  • Solid knowledge of secured lending and general corporate law.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Solid time management skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Self-starter and team player, who works with a sense of urgency in a fast-paced environment.
  • French, Spanish and/ or Italian language skills, while not required, are an asset.
